Donna passed away on May 17, 2012, in her Naples, Florida home, after a battle with lung cancer. At the time, her family released a statement saying, “Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith.”

The singer was 63 at the time of her passing. TMZ reported back in 2012 that some of Donna’s close friends thought her cigarette smoking was probably to blame for her lung cancer. However, she believed that it was linked to 9/11.

She reportedly thought she had developed the ailment after inhaling the toxic gas that spread in the air around Manhattan after the Twin Tower attack.

The Last Dance singer lived in a New York apartment near the towers during the attack.

Donna was married twice during her lifetime. Her first marriage was with Helmuth Sommer. The pair shared one daughter from their marriage – Natalia Pia Melanie Sommer, nicknamed Mimi. Their marriage lasted only three years between 1973 to 1976.

Donna’s second marriage was a long one. She tied the knot with singer Bruce Sudano. The pair were married from 1980 to 2012. They welcomed two children Brooklyn Sudano and Amanda Sudano.
