She has one elder sister named Ann, who she regards as her closest friend and who she looked up to as a young child.

She had her high school diploma from Indianapolis’ Warren Central High School in the year 1968. Throughout her time in school, she won multiple speech and debate contests. Pauley later enrolled at Indiana University, majoring in political science and joining the sorority “Kappa Kappa Gamma.”

After graduating from college, she landed her first position as a reporter for the Indianapolis network station WISH-TV in 1972.
